In the latest episode of our epic Wild Fish / Wild Places series, Emilie Björkman heads to New Zealand where she falls head over heels for pristine rivers teeming with huge trout, while experiencing thrilling sight fishing in breathtaking panoramas.
Emilie visits legendary guide Tony Entwistle – one of the pioneers of fly fishing and guiding in New Zealand – to celebrate his 42-year career and find out how trout fishing has changed over time. They visit a small creek to hunt surprisingly big fish and discuss how it and others must be protected – while calling on anglers everywhere to leave a light footprint and no trace.
Being a dream destination for trout fanatics worldwide puts pressure on land, water and people. Richie Cosgrove of Fish and Game, who manage the fishing in New Zealand, gives Emilie his perspective on the blessing and the curse of protecting this precious environment.
But as Emilie journeys through the South Island battling challenging weather with trout ace Simon Chu, heavy rain stops play. They up sticks and head to the backcountry with big-fish-guide Tom Hodge for one last chance to catch a truly memorable trout. Does she succeed? There’s only one way to find out.
