Manda Bay is a small privately owned boutique lodge located on the northern tip of Manda Island in the Lamu archipelago on Kenya’s coast. An unspoilt, secluded location where you can switch off from the rest of the world, take your shoes off and enjoy simplistic beauty in palm thatched cottages, open living spaces and most importantly of all – world class salt water fishing for a huge variety of species.
Fly fishing at Manda Bay is some of the best the African coast has to offer. From deep sea fishing for marlin to skiff fishing off the shore for sailfish, or even walking the surf in search of a giant trevally or barracuda, Manda Bay is famous for both the number, size and variety of species on offer.
The fishing season starts in September and runs all the way through until May. Anglers have the option of staying close to shore or heading out to deeper waters in Manda’s own boat – a Lochin 33ft Sportfisher called Cheza. There is the option of a half day (6 hours) fishing or full day (10 hours) out on the ocean.
The guides at Manda Bay have been there for years and know the water better than anyone. Not only do they have years of local knowledge, but also excellent boat skills that will give you the best possible chance of catching a good number of fish. The guides will help you with as much or as little as you want. From tackling up your rod to washing it down when you return back to the lodge.
The only access to Manda Bay is by speedboat so guests can enjoy this private island all to themselves. Manda Bay combines the ultimate bush and beach experience with miles of soft white sand on a private beach and coconut palms mixed with doum palms, acacia tortilis and a variety of wildlife.
The beautiful accommodation consists of 22 rooms in total – including 11 Beachfront, 5 Seaview rooms and 6 Garden Rooms.
The Beachfront rooms are situated right on the waterfront where guests can walk out of their room and jump straight into the sea. The rooms are cool and airy with a sea breeze and are made up of twin or double beds with an ensuite bathroom, twin basins and a shower. There is no glass or shutters on the windows but the rooms have thick white curtains and a large walk-in mosquito net with an overhead fan. The Seaview rooms sit behind those on the beachfront, with the smaller and quieter Garden rooms situated further back.
All rooms have a dressing table/writing table with a mirror and hair dryer. Drinking water and a flashlight are provided as well a soaps, shampoo and all linen.
Food & Cuisine
Manda Bay’s kitchen is fully staffed by a professional team of chefs serving up a variety of local and international dishes.
Breakfast is served in the dining room each morning with a choice of fresh fruit, home made granola, cooked English breakfast, pancakes and toast, tea and coffee.
Lunch is a ‘set’ menu of freshly caught fish or locally sourced seafood dishes with a variety of salads and vegetable dishes followed by a desert.
Dinner is always a set 3 course meal served outside under the stars.
