In the latest episode of our Wild Fish / Wild Places series, Emilie Björkman kicks off the northern hemisphere fly fishing season in the Italian Dolomites.
She’s targeting the marble trout – Salmo marmoratus – when the first few weeks of spring give fly fishers a better chance of catching this elusive fish.
Emilie teams up with her Italian friends, all-round fly fishing genius Mauro Mazzo and top guide Stefano Fedrizzi, getting an introduction to Mauro’s preferred nymph fishing technique – “the mono”, while battling the rough conditions that come with early season fishing.
She also talks to trout specialist and ichthyologist Pierpaolo Gibertoni, as they travel through the area in search of this spectacular fish that can reach over 20 kilos in weight.
Does she find the elusive marble? Watch the episode to find out.
